Nurturing Love for Animals in Your Child

Instilling positive feelings for animals in your children makes them more respectful, responsible, loving, and kind.

While most children are naturally curious to know more about the four-legged fluffy friends that they see on the streets, they might not know how to approach or behave around them. In this blog, we will explore some of the ways through which you can familiarize your growing children with the animal kingdom.

1.Regular visits to animal shelters

Volunteer with your child at the local animal shelter and get involved as much as possible. Such organizations are always in need of extra hands and they’d love to have your family around often.
By spending time around cats and dogs, your child will learn their behaviors, learn how to care for them, and feel more comfortable in their presence.

In addition to this, participating in fundraising campaigns will teach your children that they can make a difference if they are passionate about a cause. These little acts of kindness will make an impression and foster feelings of love and compassion in your child for animals and humans.

2.Get a pet

If there is one way to encourage your children to be more responsible, it is by getting a pet. Before making that decision, be sure you can give the adorable animal the attention and care it deserves. Include your child in caring for your family pet. Whether it’s filling their water bowl, serving them food, or cleaning up after them, children need to be aware of the responsibilities first. Creating a pet daily checklist is a great place to start. Rotating responsibilities weekly can be helpful for all.

Fostering animals is also another option. If this isn’t possible, then consider creating a wildlife-friendly environment right in your backyard! Grow fragrant flowers to attract butterflies, set up a squirrel feeding station, or put birdfeeders out so that your children can observe the animal’s behavior in silence.

3.Read books and watch movies about pets

The movies 101 Dalmatians and Lady and the Tramp continue to be favorites of people who love dogs. There are also great books about pet adoption. The Lindie Lou Adventure Series is a perfect example. The books are a wonderful read aloud for families contemplating getting a pet. Readers learn about a litter of five puppies living in a “Puppy Playground”. Their personalities are revealed as they grow and play until they are adopted by their “forever families”.

A child who experiences the unconditional love that pets are known to give, grows up to be a more emotionally cognizant, tender, and empathetic adult. All you need to do teach them, model the correct behavior with pets, be patient, and leave the rest up to them.
